Wednesday Webinar Part 2 a.k.a. "I'm back... :-)" #5

Last posting was about being a "Digital Citizen", so now I'm going to speak to my "Digital Footprint"

I created this of sorts through Tagxedo. A free program for making wordles.

I typed in my name in Google...
Who are all those people out there using my name?
Will the real Nina Benson please get some rest?
...And as far as the images... Who are all those people? Oddly, they are relatively young and not my color.

Where is the real me?

The real me has a relatively small footprint verses the huge footprint out there from some of my students and they have only been around for at the most 14-15 years. It's all about what one puts out there for the world to see. Do my students understand this "connectedness"? Probably not.

My students' worlds, (some live in their own private world), are made up of texting, facebook, insta-gram, and a few other social media outlets. Their parents may have started them off at birth with a facebook page. These same parents may have given little Johnny or little Julia their cell phone to play with, (this is when they mimicked mommy and starting pushing buttons). For some of my dears their introduction into the digital world started before their first birthday, hence the huge footprint.

Students, parents EVERYBODY needs to know what they are getting themselves into. It's about responsibility. Technology is great. There are unbelievable resources that brilliant folks create everyday and they provide these resources for "free", (However the skeptic in me says, nothing is free - everything comes with a cost. What are we really being asked to give up - it could be a far reaching cost that isn't in the too distant future - (this is the paranoid Nina {:-o). We must teach safety and responsibility. Big Brother is indeed watching and it's not just from the yellow/red light cameras throughout the city of Chicago.

P.S. No. I don't Facebook. However, I do Yelp. I just typed in my name with yelp and again there's all those crazy other people again using my name... And I thought I was unique. Well, look for my yelp with my picture. I yelp about Troha's Shrimp, (best shrimp place ever) and La Dulce Vida Neveria, real fruit smoothies all the time.

Now my pretties here are some more freebies from class...Hey, we can't pass up a good deal can we?

 Piglets
This is a free coloring page

Okay. Not Piglet but http://www.piclits.com/about.aspx. This is a site that offers backdrops for creative writing. One might call it inspirational.

Test time! http://quizlet.com/ This is just plain-o-fun. This is up there with Khan Academy, (you do know about Khan Academy?)

I also learned about memes, (making posters from your photos or popular pictures that are available for free) and PLN, (Personal Learning Network - One major use is a community for resources that specific people have used and want to share - a bit like yelp but with an educational bent). Look up these resources on your favorite search engine.

Ta, ta for now :-)
